Four years ago, my husband planted his first garden.
I grew up in the city and figured it was a good
hobby for
him (but I didn't expect anything to grow,
to be honest) & decided to drag my chair out to the
garden with my iced-espresso and draw.  It was a
bit of a game at first, I teased him while he
worked, commenting on his sunburned neck and the
tangled mess at his feet (he planted all vines that
first year and didn't plan for a path so he was
always knee deep in cucumbers, squash, zucchini,
and pumpkins while screaming like a little girl about
the bees)!

Here we are four years later with a much better plan, a partnership where I apply
the sunscreen, fetch the tools, keep the dog out, plan vacations so they don't
interfere with planting or harvesting and keep the espresso iced while he avoids the
gym by turning the soil, pulling weeds, building fencing & raised beds & putting
things like purple carrots and lemon cucumbers in front of our 2 girls at the dinner
table!

This garden, like the vines the first year, has sneaked it's way around my cynicism,
choked my doubts, and bloomed in my heart. While I still adore my bird friends and
find them popping up here and there in my work, I am much more concerned about
the balance between us, they sing for us until we leave and then they eat the girls'
strawberries!  I also must consider the essential bug population that is both necessary
and problematic.  I can pour a perfectly smooth dill-resin and find myself drilling
holes into it as soon as it cures... natural is just more beautiful than picturesque.
